The GreenATM process

The process of gaining GreenATM accreditation was rigorous, says Kearney, but ultimately transformative for AirNav Ireland.

“It provided us with a structured framework to evaluate and improve our environmental performance,” he says. “The CANSO GreenATM programme offered clear guidelines and support, which helped us to systematically address areas where we could reduce our environmental impact. Although it was challenging, it was also an invaluable learning experience that has strengthened our commitment to sustainability.”

Given the global threat of climate change and the growing demand for air travel, pursuing a sustainable aviation industry is imperative. AirNav Ireland is dedicated to playing a significant role in this effort and will continue to build on its commitment to sustainability.

Building on its Level 3 accreditation, AirNav Ireland is committed to further enhancing its sustainability efforts. The ANSP plans to invest in more advanced technologies that will reduce energy consumption and emissions, such as optimising flight paths for fuel efficiency and exploring the use of renewable energy sources in AirNav Ireland’s operations.

Additionally, collaboration with all aviation stakeholders – airlines, airports, regulators, and industry partners – will be a cornerstone of the strategy. The company recognises that true sustainability in aviation can only be achieved through collective action. By working closely with these stakeholders, AirNav Ireland aims to implement coordinated initiatives that maximise environmental benefits across the entire aviation value chain.

It is currently partnering with airlines on trials for continuous descent operations (CDO) at Irish airports, for example, which is yielding very promising results.

“Continuous improvement will be key, and we are dedicated to regularly reviewing and updating our sustainability strategies to stay ahead of industry developments and ensure that we are making meaningful contributions to global sustainability goals,” adds Kearney.

Achieving true sustainability will be a significant challenge for ANSPs, Kearney continues, especially in the aviation sector, where intricate interdependencies and financial constraints, such as the Single European Sky and performance schemes, play a significant role.

“However, though the journey towards sustainability is demanding, it remains achievable,” he says. “ANSPs like AirNav Ireland are vital in this process, but success requires a coordinated effort across the entire aviation ecosystem.

“The recognition also reinforces our position as a leader in the industry, setting an example for other air navigation service providers (ANSPs) to follow. Importantly, it aligns with our state and European goals to combat climate change and ensures that we are contributing to a more sustainable future for aviation.”

AirNav Ireland has long been committed to integrating sustainability into every aspect of its operations, from air traffic management to administrative processes. Achieving Level 3 accreditation reflects these sustained efforts over the years and is a significant milestone for the company.

Balancing operational efficiency with environmental responsibility has required continuous innovation and close collaboration across departments. Adapting to evolving environmental regulations and aligning with international standards has also been a complex, ongoing process.

“This accreditation reflects our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, enhance energy efficiency and integrate sustainable practices across our operations,” says Dr. Peter Kearney, CEO, AirNav Ireland.
