Farhan Guliyev, Director of AZANS

“Azerbaijan's strategic location and sustainable air navigation services support global aviation connectivity,” said Farhan Guliyev, Director of AZANS. “We are proud that our city is the platform for crucial discussions on the future of green airspace and digital technologies enabling aviation’s net zero goals. Recognising our responsibility for sustainable aviation, we look forward to contributing to global collaboration and innovation.”

AZANS plays a vital role in managing air traffic and ensuring flight safety within Azerbaijan’s airspace. AZANS’ responsibilities extend over 165,400 km2 of airspace, managing around 12,000 km of air routes. The organisation's dedication to international standards and high-tech solutions has positioned it as a regional player in aeronautical support. Recognition by airspace users is a valuable asset for AZANS to continue its achievements in-flight safety.

Since 2021, overflight traffic in  Azerbaijan has increased 360 per cent. Today, approximately 18,000 monthly overflights are carried out in the airspace of Azerbaijan, with about 900 aircraft serviced daily. This growth highlights the importance of the airspace as a transit hub connecting Europe and Asia. AZANS’ efforts in developing a digital highway between Europe and Eurasia for aviation data exchange are pivotal, enhancing the digitalisation of communication between these regions.

According to IATA forecasts, Azerbaijan is expected to see a significant increase in passenger air transport demand, which is projected to grow 80 per cent over the next two decades. This anticipated growth underscores the importance of the region’s airspace, including its strategic role as a transit hub country.

In response to the increasing air traffic, AZANS has completed several major modernisation projects, including the implementation of a global satellite tracking system using Aireon satellite stations. This system, supported by SpaceX’s Iridium NEXT satellites, launched by SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets, provides real-time surveillance over Azerbaijan's airspace, enhancing flight safety. Furthermore, AZANS has launched a platform for dynamic airspace management, representing a revolutionary shift towards a digital future in aviation.

AZANS is also working on the Europe-Eurasia digital highway project, which will enable the exchange of aeronautical data between centres in Europe and Baku, thereby improving the digitalisation of communications between Europe and the Eurasian region. This project is part of AZANS’ strategic goals to digitalise air navigation services, incorporating artificial intelligence, modern satellite, radar and navigation and automation systems.

In addition, the organisation is advancing unmanned aviation by creating a Civil Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Control Center. Collaborating with IATA, AZANS has introduced a three-tier flight safety management system, significantly improved service quality and developed its National Airspace Strategy.

Furthermore, AZANS is focused on new projects driven by the increase in air traffic and demand for air navigation services by airspace users. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to address the growing demand for air navigation services and meet ICAO’s Global Air Navigation Plan requirements.

AZANS actively collaborates with Central Asia countries for harmonisation of the airspace within the region, highlighting the expansion of route networks at a regional level.

The CANSO ATM Summit in Baku is a testament to Azerbaijan’s status as a reliable partner in global aviation. It presents opportunities for establishing new partnerships, strengthening industry connections and recognising Azerbaijan's achievements in civil aviation.

Baku is not only hosting an event but also setting the stage for global collaboration and innovation in sustainable aviation. The CANSO Global ATM Summit 2024 and 28th AGM in Baku will be a landmark event, underscoring Azerbaijan’s commitment to advancing the future of air traffic management and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This event comes ahead of another major international gathering, COP29, which will also be held in Baku, 11-22 November. COP29 will bring world leaders together to address climate change, further highlighting Baku's pivotal role in global environmental discussions and its commitment to sustainability.

The CANSO Global ATM Summit 2024 and 28th Annual General Meeting (AGM) is being hosted by AZANS (Azeraeronavigation) in Baku, Azerbaijan, 10-13 June. This year’s event, with a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, brings together world leaders from the air traffic management (ATM) industry for a week of knowledge exchange, insightful discussions and significant decision making.
